Jan. 23rd, 2006 10:25 amWow.
I was driving back into Chch from Rangiora, and I have to go past the airport. As I drove past the US Antarctic Program area, I saw TWO big tails sticking up. So I took a detour to have a look, and there were 2 Globemaster III C-17's instead of the usual one. The new bird was 44138 from March Air Reserve base, sitting next to regular 80054, from McChord Airforce base. And she was warming up.
So I sat and watched for about half an hour, maybe 45 minutes before she began to taxi out. I guessed that she'd be using the main runway, 02, and there's a road that run right past the end of it.
So I planted boot, and parked down the end. I could see her tail in the distance, up by the main airport.
And she took off RIGHT over me.
I can't wipe the grin off my face.
God, she was beautiful.
You smell that? Do you smell that?... Avgas, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of avgas in the morning.
